IMHO, NATO as a military cooperation was part of the reason not whole Europe felt under the hegemony of a non-democratic dictatorship.

With the advent of the European Union as a democratic based hegemon itself NATO is more of a liability, especially with the fascist orange an tech-bros taking over the US of A.

I'm in favor of large unified economies. And until all of the world is one unified economy we probably need some sort of military to guard – and only guard – against outside threats.

Thats a pretty good take, I think the NATO covering not only Europe but NA and Iceland makes it valuable, but you're definitely not a tankie.

But NATO isn't valuable anymore. Good economic ties are. And the willingness to protect those ties.

Even when we achive global stateless communism, the fact that the world itself doesn't provide everywhere everthing forces some kind of barter and distribution system – until post-scarcisity is achieved, of course.

Right now we have part of this system in Europe with the EEZ. Economic freedom is one pillar of personal freedom. Being able to travel, live and work everywhere is the first step to a stateless system.

Large mutual defence pacts are better than simple economic ties.

Sometimes its better to end ties with some nations. Example: if nations bought russian oil and gas they would use that money to wage war on Ukraine.

Another example: Chinese strong economic ties to and support of Iran did nothing to prevent Israel's invasion or USA's bombing.

If every nation on earth agreed to immediately destroy aggressor nations, a universal defence pact, then there would be no wars. All war comes from apath for our neighbors.
