Just a convenient and widely recognized symbol to represent the authoritarian left.
Maybe I could have used something more technically correct, but then a lot of people wouldn't be able to tell what it was supposed to represent. (And besides, I've yet to talk to a single auth-left person who doesn't idolize the Soviets.)
