Wait... grates parallel to the driving direction are legal where you live? That's insanely stupid... And not just for the safety of bikes (and other narrow tires) but just purely because of physics and load-bearing capacity.

They’re often diagonal, but yes. If you catch your wheel in this you’re going to crash and wreck your bike.

Also in the rain with oil run off from the roads makes these things like patches of ice.
