“Iran’s strategy and only real option is to continue attacking and increase the costs on the Americans and U.S. allies. Part of that strategy of increasing costs means attacking the GCC countries but also hitting U.S. bases in the region. We have now seen the three Americans killed and the Iranians know that Americans are sensitive to casualties including in a midterm election year,” said Azodi. “For Iran, an ideal scenario might be to fight for three to four weeks after which there is no clear winner at the end—they are trying to increase pressure in every way. They cannot win the war but they can absorb a lot of punishment and can force it to stop.”

I do think this time is a bit different given the media and information landscape but I agree that most Americans will only understand the stakes when it becomes impossible to distract themselves from it. I guess it'll just happen way faster when you factor in both the economic consequences and the saturation of information.

Think about it this way; the wars in the middle east in the 00's already created a good deal of domestic backlash and that was BEFORE 2008, before Covid, before the Trump era, and before the incoming AI pop, back when Americans had some degree of wealth. Now that the dems and GOP have spent 20 whole years gutting social safety nets, funneling wealth upwards, and generally just pissing off all Americans regardless of their affiliation, there's simply nothing left to distract them from this and nothing to justify it either.

There are no looping reels of the twin towers collapsing on 24-hour news this time, just a bunch of footage of Israel burning and who could give a shit about that almost 3 years after 10/7? People see that type of thing every other day. Polls are showing that most Americans, even if they don't see Israel for what it really is and care about the genocide, are just plain sick of hearing about it and seeing their tax money pumped there for nothing in return. Trump's electorate voted for isolationism and an improvement in material conditions and that is what they expect to see. If the empire were smart they would try and distance Israel from all of this to prevent this but they can't anyways (Israel won't let them nor will they let the world forget that they are intimately involved in all of this).

So they're in a bit of a pickle, eh?

PS. The last time that the state department sold the president on a totally low-risk, short-term military operation that would definitely never fail and it blew up in their faces, and the president got vengeful and tried to discipline them for it, his head got blown up. Just some food for thought. Take heart.
