Iraq and Afghanistan weren't proxy wars either, afaik. The US is just a oppressive empire that attacks places to subjugate them, worse than Russia.
It feels less about imperial subjugation these days than just feeding the military industrial complex, which unfortunately has only gotten bigger with AI companies in the mix. Peter Thiel needs to get to a trillion in net worth SOMEHOW!

I do have to admit though, China is far more clever about it. While they continue to intimidate nearby states, they haven't done a military invasion in recent times (I think. I don't know of any).
However, their economic influence has become a major source of power in Africa and many Asian countries.
