It also makes files harder to compress.

That's generally with dithering tho. I've investigated dithering years ago for compression and despite the reduced color channels, dithered media still needs more space in all (compressing) media formats. And the better the dithering algorithm, the less noticeable patterns you get, the worse the compression.
