Good idea to try out the mechanics first before jumping into the expedition. It has you going out to pick up hazardous waste from fairly distant dumps and a lot of people (myself included) did the round trip to the first dump and used the scale thing to auto process, which results in the waste being processed, but not as hazardous, so you have to do it all over again.
Some tips for the expedition:
spoiler
Use the waypoint saves any time you see one. One of the goals is to tag 6 of them, and it’s currently buggy, so they don’t always register. You can apparently do it at the end once you get your ship.
Pick up the big items at the hazardous waste dump, they don’t tend to fall out as easy. Grab more than the minimum in case you lose some. Keep an eye on the cargo count in the bottom corner of the hud while you’re trucking in case one pops out and you don’t notice. Pick up even quantities of all 3 types as there is a goal for each type to process a certain amount.
When you get engine upgrades double check the new ones against your current lower tier ones (ie when going from B to A), you probably want the top speed improvements rather than the fuel economy. I had a bunch of B class top speed improvements and I trashed them all before installing the new A ones, which were all fuel economy improvements instead of speed. Fuel is really easy to get, C+ is everywhere.
After placing your geobay and summoning/customizing your ride, pick it up again so you can recreate it later.
Knowing the 2 item input refining recipes is really helpful for getting decent quantities of ferrite, chromatic metal and parafinium early on.
I'll also add that I had issues with inventory space because I stupidly accepted the Collection of Decorative Bones reward and could not find anywhere to sell things. Road Trip IV rewards you with a Pre-Packaged Trade Rocket Unit. :)
This expedition taught me not to blindly accept rewards. I lost a couple of hours because I was trying to find a trade terminal.
