Wes Streeting is the current health secretary and belongs politically to the Labour right (and is a massive twat). Peter Mandelson was an influential politician in Balir's New Labour and kind of just never left, playing a part in McSweeney and co's purging of the left from the party after Corbyn resigned and Starmer got elected. As part of this, they stuffed the higher levels of the party with loyalists to Starmer and gave Mandelson the ambassadorial role to America, despite his established connections to Epstein (George Parker at the FT has been loud about this for years). Mandelson is now in trouble because the recent batch of Epstein files have revealed he'd been selling state secrets to Epstein and everyone close to Mandelson is also getting swept up in it, Streeting included.

This piece is him trying to wash his hands of this, because he's suppose to be the favourite to succeed Starmer for No 10.
