I looked a little bit at why far-right politicians are so popular in Latin America and every time I read that there was an increase in violent crime the past years and now everyone wants to copycat Nayib Bukele. Why did crime increase in the first place?

About Brazil specifically: in the past decade or fifteen years, it appears that organized crime has been developing into strong institutions with ties to the police, military, churches, politics and banks.

Their more immediately apparent effect is the recruiting, arming and training of socially vulnerable minors in the outskirts of cities, which then start local "wars" with each other with considerable death tolls. This inflow of guns and training also find their way into the hands of criminals that are more interested in small, quick gains instead of the whole criminal institution development: robbery, kidnappings etc.

If I can invoke BMF…

MFW sociology really is a big game of cops and robbers. It’s just that we’re the cops and the robbers just so happen to own cops the institution.

…and something something PMC suburban hitlerites.

https://hexbear.net/u/black_mold_futures was a poster who would post in hard to parse style about various news topics using a lot of silly vocabulary like "DSA PMC karens" and whatnot, but they tended to be pretty funny because of the absurdity. They kept getting banned for sectarianism and went through a few accounts here before finally leaving for good, but they've been immortalized into early site lore.
