Perceived omnipotence through excessive wealth, obsequious entourage of devoted followers eager for some reflected limelight, depthless entitlement from generations of a better than thou attitude.
The moat of excessive resources and power can isolate the humanity from the human.
The power and associated external adulation/validation by other elites is probably addictive as well, creating a toxic feedback loop.
So, I guess you could say, with increasing resources and power comes the temptation and easier ability to stop giving a crap about other people due to a perceived sense of infallibility and invincibility.
Perhaps when one gets to that level of orgabized crime and corruption, it becomes impossible to escape because you know too much about too many, so your only option is to continue along the same path (edit: or be killed by your associates as a liability to their guilt).
