I’m glad to see an indie film doing well but u have my doubts as to how good a movie by Markiplier can be especially considering he’s not an actor and it’s based on a 30 minute game.
If you speedran the game it could probably be as short as 30 minutes (or shorter, speed runners are practically wizards at times), but then you're missing out on some good stuff. More importantly, you don't need to be a nepo baby with millions in your wallet and dozens of agents in order to be an actor. Some of the best acting I've ever seen has been at local community theaters. Like all skills, you just need a good combination of skill, practice, coaching, and a bit of luck
...neither of which are true? He's as much an actor as anyone else in the industry, he just doesn't have a giant distributor behind him. He's a member of SAG-AFTRA, this was a union movie. You might not like how he performs, but that doesn't make him not an actor. And since you haven't seen the movie, your opinion is moot on that point.
And the game is definitely longer than 30 minutes. It's eldritch/cosmic horror, so definitely not everyone's genre, but Mark and David did an astounding job bringing it to the big screen.
I saw it. Mark obviously isn't an actor and his delivery could be better. He tries to play his character but there's moments in the movie where he's just markiplier playing Iron lung on stream again. The middle of the movie is like 30-40 minutes of "OK something big is definitely going to happen" and it doesn't. I think I saw someone describe it as "soggy" or "floppy" or something similar and I think that's accurate.
That said, the paranormal lovecraftian horror vibe was spot on. The hints dropped were adequate but there's no handholding with the plot, it shows and doesn't tell for the most part. I came in a little leery about an entire movie taking place in a tiny sub but I think it was done very well. They kept all the lore of the game almost verbatim and expanded it to give a little more insight into the world and the Spooky Thing. Probably a 7/10 overall. Maybe 6 if I'm being super critical, but for a passion project? Pretty solid.
A two-hour movie based on a thirty-minute game where the only person on screen (in the movie) is a YouTube celebrity.
It’s really hard to get excited.
You... Realize Mark isn't in the game, right?
I thought it was really obvious I was talking about the movie. He plays the main character of the movie.
Sorry, let me match your tone.
You… thought I was talking about the game and not the movie? It seems clear to me that the YouTube celebrity wouldn’t also be in the game, but I’ll clarify.
Joke's on you, mark is in the game!
The dev added a "cheat" where every surface texture becomes Mark's face.
Also if you like markiplier or cosmic horror, I'd recommend the movie. Otherwise, it's not a must-see.
