You definitely have a point, despite the downvotes.

The headline uses the extreme to bury his admitted crimes. He’s facing 38 charges, including many that he already pleaded guilty to.

Hoiby today pleaded guilty to several of the more minor counts, including assaults, a narcotics charge, traffic offences and violations of restraining orders.

Oh cool! Pleading guilty to violating restraining orders.

He was arrested again on Sunday evening on suspicion of assault, making threats with a knife and violating a restraining order.

Wow that is quite specific for someone who is innocent until proven guilty!

Hoiby was first arrested on 4 August 2024 on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend the night before.

Several days later, he admitted he had acted “under the influence of alcohol and cocaine after an argument”, having suffered from “mental troubles” and struggling “for a long time with substance abuse”.

The investigation into that incident uncovered a string of other suspected offences, including the rapes of four women while they were sleeping or passed out drunk, some of which he filmed.

Gosh, I wonder why he’s going to trial for the rapes? Nothing to do with “You can’t prove that I raped you!” I bet.

People are always so quick to dismiss rapists, if they're not condemned they're innocent, and if they have been condemned they are fine too because they were punished so you can't criticize.

Lemmy isn't a court, this article either, but for some reason everyone is trying so hard to defend rapists that even when a guy has enough charges to write a few books, people go on with a million "allegedly" and "innocent until proven guilty", even when the guy has fucking VIDEOS OF THE RAPES.

The fact that multiple people saw my comments and felt the need to defend this "poor guy" by downvoting or arguing against that is really scary to me, because it leads me to wonder if that's an accurate representation of people who support rape. And lemmy is definitely less bad than the average social media when it comes to social awareness, which is even more worrying.

I think people were just explaining why the headline had to say allegedly, not defending the rapist. The post title says allegedly because the original headline does, and the original headline does because news outlets can get into a lot of trouble if they don't when someone hasn't been convicted yet, potentially even being liable for prejudicing a trial and causing a criminal who'd otherwise have been convicted to go free.

I thought “why is everyone insisting on ‘innocent until proven guilty’?” and I came to the same conclusion you did.

At first I was like… are there super fans of this particular monarchy or something? Because I didn’t really want to believe that there are more people who think multiple women are going to pretend they were sexually assaulted by a prince for clout.

It’s crazy to me that society seems to legitimately regress sometimes.

I want to say even my comment has received downvotes. I can’t roll my eyes hard enough at that.
