You can hardly expect an avid mystery solver to just sit around waiting for mysteries to happen. Where's the initiative?
Just like Sherlock Holmes in that one movie where he gets accused of creating crimes for himself to solve.

Angela Lansbury's character in Murder She Wrote is the most successful TV serial killer. No way someone was dying every week in whatever small town she happened to visit only for her to successfully pin the blame on someone else.
