Please tell me that he played without rhythm, I know from experience that playing a drum without a rhythm makes it 23 times worse to try and ignore....

Just out there smacking the cymbals and snare drum randomly while hammering the bass and occasionally dropping a stick on the floor tom, shout a few times and start over.
