Back during plantation days did everyone have slaves on them? Or would a person be so inclined get a plot of land and farm it or work it him or herself? (lemmy.world)

I guess it's because you don't have to house a hired servant or even feed them. You just pay them for the work done.

I don't get too comfortable comparing human beings to objects, but think of renting a car versus owning a car.
