That happened to me once in Germany, when I was young; I can’t remember in which city. I had taken a first tram line where you stamped your ticket inside the car (just like it worked back in my city), then later during the day I jumped into another streetcar, expecting it to work the same, but on that line the stamping machines were on the platforms... and I was unlucky enough that a fare control guy entered at the next stop. But then he saw that I was a stupid, confused tourist, and didn’t fine me. I was so grateful to him for being lenient, ha ha. With my budget, a fine would have sucked, but I felt like the shame of being perceived as dishonest while visiting a foreign country would have been even worse.
