Old people seem less competent because they are.
Back in the day, you got one big change in tech every few years. You still had farms and people using horses in New York City as late as 1960*
Even if an older person embraced tech in 2000 AD they've seen a dozen newer versions come up. The first iPhone was 2007; we're up to the 16 now. Windows 10 is going out.
Unless the older person is willing to work to keep up, they will be left behind.
Put it this way. Take the average person from 1890 and put them in 1990. Once they learn to drive a car and deal with electric lights, they'll fit right in. Someone from 2000 dropped in 2026 would have a much tougher time of it.
*yes, I know there are carriage horses in Central Park. I was talking about people using horses for mundane businesses like junk collection.
