You could try MiXplorer. There's the full version of it on xdaforums or support the dev buying the silver version on google play. I haven't use the smb functionality but it says it supports it.

This is EXACTLY what I wanted and solo much more!! This guy has thought of everything. Not only grid mode but also gallery. Storage types more than I've even heard of!
There are like a thousand pathetic simple file managers on the app shops but this one never came up on my searches. Or I just didn't notice.
This app does everything and more than every other combined! And it performs FASTTTTTT!

Happy to help. I've been using it for years and only recently bought the silver version to support the devs. I feel guilty waiting so long lol.
No other file managers come close.
You can even drag and drop files, either in the same pane/tab, or to different tabs.
If you didn't found out while testing it, yes it can open tabs.
