I believe before those we just used and remembered disgusting images like tubgirl.

Well or ASCII art of trolls with fishes.

I guess there just wasn't enough bandwidth to send images around and not many platforms supporting images or hosting them. Traffic and bandwidth where expensive

Goatse and LemonParty also had very short URL links to their images, so you could sneak in the <img src= bit into a comment field that only allowed like, fifty characters, and still have some room for a bit of text too.
