I think it needs to be pointed out that what Trump has done is highly illegal in the USA and unless he never leaves office or otherwise gets pardoned then he will be going to prison. Just like when Ford pardoned Nixon.
Oh?
https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/supreme-court-grants-trump-future-presidents-a-blank-check-to-break-the-law
I'm pretty sure the exact ruling allows forgiveness for all "official acts" which brings up the question of whether going to war without congressional approval counts as an official act. The president does not have the authority to do this.
"Official acts" was defined as any that were connected to his holding office. His brushing his teeth is not an official act as the president. We all brush our teeth. Only one individual orders the US military to ambush foreign states. He is president and everyone else is not.
I am simply noting the plain fact, that the reason for the invasion occurring is its being ordered by the president. Hence, the order is an "official act" as defined. Why are you shouting, instead of reading and thinking?
An official act outside of his office's authority or capacity is not official, or else the term applies to everything, including brushing his teeth.
You are free to insist on your own definition, but yours will not take precedence, in any future proceedings, over the one from the ruling.
Why are you not understanding?
I simply will repeat that your representation of the ruling is not accurate.
Urgh, they are not "defending donald trump". They are just commenting that due to the us supreme court the united states is no longer a nation under the rule of law and the constitution is more or less a dead document now. Sorry you had to find out on Lemmy about that.
Saying Donald Trump cannot / should not be held responsible is defending him.
No it would be defending him if they said trump should not be held responsible, good thing that was not said. As far as "cannot" goes they are (correctly) pointing out that at this moment there is not a court in the us of a that will hold trump responsible.
Donald Trump was seeing trial until 77 Million assholes put him back in, and 9 Million assholes who voted for Biden stayed home for Harris.
They can and should see trial. We need to be demanding this, now. We need to be putting our efforts towards that outcome. We cannot just sit around, resigned to our fates, and see how it plays out.
You need to do more, yes. We are not all american and at this point I don't think your nation has the ability to hold a trial much less stick to a punishment.
International criminal proceedings exist, actually, I would say this now involves all of us whether you like it or not.
Has a single american ever faced an international criminal court? And have any been punished?
If not then let's make this the first.
That is a great attitude.
Wasn't the case this ruling was tied to about election obstruction? Not sure how that's more of an official act?
Technically he was still seeing trial over his election obstruction, he just didn't make it to sentencing before his reelection.
you mean just like the fat orange thing went to prison for its other crimes?
He was on his way until 77,302,580 people put him back in the white house while 9 Million people who voted for Biden didn't show up at all for Harris.
He was never on his way. If it was going to happen it would have happened on Jan 6th. He could have been taken into custody and made to stand trial. Instead they waited at least 2 years to even start anything. If that's how our system works it needs to be ended. It's useless
Mods removed my comment for saying noted facts that Biden sucked shit about getting Trump. When he did treason, the easiest way to give someone federal jail.
Might as well be pro Trump with that.
That was pro trump. I know in my area of the world even the most right people I talked did not understand why trump did not get any punishment, even the pro trump ones did not get it. I think that the lack of action was the last straw holding up the us's illusion of democracy for many. The young man who drove down main st in the town I have a storefront with a literal 3rd retch flag flying off the back of his truck told me that he did not think trump and biden where on opposing teams at all (you can not get much more right wing then that guy). When the crazy people protesting the "world" government think that the usa's two party system is fake, and yet not lizard people, start making sense the end is nigh.
Yep. Mods hate that their guy is guilty of letting treason get away without issue and run again.
I don't think they have a guy at all. I think the us has just unfortunately gotten into a if not us then them mentality.
Any time someone says something critical of one person it seems to be taken by many as endorsement of the other side of the imaginary team based thing the states has become. And if you state you don't like ether of the teams on display they call you a centralist as if you are part of their wild ride.
It's literally happening to me right now in this thread. I've had people tell me I'm a Trump supporter/Tankie/fake leftist/whatever thought terminating cliche MSNBC told them to call people who said supporting popular policies to aid in the struggles of the poor would win elections.
I literally have a few people downvoting my account because I call them out on their behavior. They're not normal but will insist they're the good guys, as they shun anyone who wants the "lesser" evil to be less evil and win.
Yeah, lots of that goes on here. See it as well, you are not the only one that get the fun end of American exceptionalism. In fact just today I pissed of one I guess enough to get hate DMs, and that is a new one for me.
Silver lining with the us empire coming apart in front of us is that hopefully the world will change and those "good guys" will not be so normal.
In 40 years when we're dead from the climate Holocaust and WW3, people will look at the liberals who stood by the people who tried to warn them and said they're being hyperbolic with the scorn of those who did nothing to stop Hitler.
Eh, I live almost 2km above sea level 1000s of kms from any ocean or fault line with winters still getting into the -50s, I am sure it will be survivable. If I am still alive in 40 years I am interested in seeing what happens, if everything does not burn down in bush/forest fires.
Impunity and nonaccountability for presidents is deeply embedded in the framework of American society. Unless they target corporations and the wealthy, they are securely protected despite their evildoing.
Who's going to put him in prison
Laws only matter when they are enforced.
The chances of the law being enforced is extremely slim.
Like when Andrew 'Genocide' Jackson said of the Supreme Court, "They have made their decision, now let them enforce it"
Of course, this SCOTUS is filled with bootlickers, so the Trump regime may not even have to do that much.
