My extremely unhip mom learned what a meme is, on her own, over 10 years ago. Memes are not sacred or obscure knowledge. Everybody knows what a meme is.

Rolling Stone is a pop culture and politics magazine; it always has been. Memes are mainstream culture. It makes complete sense that a culture magazine would make a list of memes (or internet jokes) relevant to the past year.
