Do I think people who are oppressed for their beliefs in a country that heavily regulates what you say and also possibly killed/imprisoned their ancestors/relatives and for certain has killed, imprisoned, tortured other people who drew attention to the bad things that government has done would tell a complete stranger bad things that the government has done or is doing to them?

No not at all, Big Brother is much more capable than the PRC. That’s why there are whistleblowers and journalists and refugees etc. from the places controlled by the PRC whereas INGSOC would have been able to disappear them all without a trace lol
Also I’ve spent a significant portion of my life in a very strict religious culture. You’d be surprised how many people will keep their mouths shut and “keep up the charade” and be happy, staying silent about everything from personal beliefs to full on abuse. And that’s just because they’d face some ostracism from the people around them if they spoke up.
I’d imagine the threat of imprisonment or death or harm to their families etc. would make people hide that kind of shit even more
