Later, another reporter pressed Mamdani to clarify his response to the question. “Are you affirming that you think that President Trump is a fascist?”

“I’ve spoken about—” Mamdani began to reply, before Trump interrupted him.

“That’s OK, you can just say yes. It’s easier than explaining it. I don’t mind,” Trump said, patting Mamdani on the arm.

“Ok, alright,” said a smiling Mamdani.

No straight up I think this is the reason. Trump's a TV guy through and through. He's no stranger to having "fights" publicly to boost ratings. Look at how he talks about Bernie. Another guy who will call him an authoritarian one minute, but if he's got something good for his people on the table he comes in and says yeah let's get it done.

It's pro wrestling kayfabe. Yeah I've gotta play it up for my base, call you a fascist to win. No hard feelings right? As long as we can Make New York Great I don't really care that much. I'm not ideologically opposed to you just because you're Donald Trump and I'm Zohran Mamdani. I'm gonna have to fight you if you try to ramp up ICE actions in the city, but we can work together to lower crime this way and I'll absolutely give credit where it's due.

That kind of thing.
