Musk and Detroit convinced people that EVs should be expensive. The reality is the profit margins on EVs are huge. Battery costs dropped 90% in the last decade, there is no reason why EVs should cost more than ICE.
I think at the time, they had to prove to the world that EVs weren't a cheaper alternative but a luxurious upgrade. Now that they've established prestige, the prices should drop, well if governments do their jobs properly.
