It doesn't have to be 100% self-sufficient. It has to be, like, 99% self-sufficient and the settlers would have to import some goods from Earth for a while (like, high-tech products and such).

And i think we're probably somewhere at 70% self-sufficiency with the technology that's already being described in the literature today. Like, there's plans for water extraction from martian soil here and there's proposals to grow food in greenhouses that are essentially plastic tubes here and if we wait a little bit longer, we'll probably find ways to produce plastics for construction from the martian environment too.

A lot still has to be done, but a lot already has been done, too!
