No, they're not stupid. They're calculating.
The media is in the hands of the same rich fuckers whose existence depends on the ongoing culture and race wars, distracting from what's actually important - the class war. Trump is just a useful puppet in this, yet another distraction. Pushing his idiocy is part of that distraction.
