Seattle has done this in a few places! The city just redid a park along the downtown waterfront, and put in a big communal bathroom, and I've seen a couple at the SeaTac airport too. Maybe I'm a bit biased as a trans woman, but it really seems like the best solution to me.
i've seen these in a few places including, of all places, a cathedral.
It really makes no sense to me why these aren't more popular. Just have a wall of stalls with a couple for urinals and the rest as toilets, then a wall of sinks on the other side.
And, of course, put a trash can in each of the damn stalls. People act like cis dudes don't have garbage to toss in the bathroom either.
