I need to make a minor correction:
While the protocol is technically open source, self hosting a signal requires recompiling the client to connect to the host.
It's not federated.
Yeah, I've heard only server side of signal is closed source, but i think it doesnt matter because messages are encrypted before connecting to server if i get it right, also signal uses google's firebase notification push, theres molly fork which changes it.
