There's a neat book called Elemental Council (TW: WH40K) where one of the main characters is dealing with a similar issue.

spoilerthey're the 6th clone of a war hero. Their body is breaking down, and they need to be constantly shot up with stimulants to function. But, the (tau) empire needs their famous soldier to help with the home front.
