Oh they know. I'm pretty sure it's a subtle insult to be quite honest. Imagine a president, one who claims that he has a mandate from the people, accepting a crown. A symbol of tyrants who lay their claim of their right/mandate to rule on such things as gods and the heavens, so specifically "not the people".
Definitely. Well, seeing how they got the second visit after Japan they probably wanted equal parts flattery that he would understand and insult that he wouldn't (but everyone else would).
I hope you are right and it is not "appeasement".
He'll see it that way regardless. He's not a subtle man.
It doesn’t matter, all these acts play into the hands of the authoritarian. The only good response is to punch them in the face (metaphorically, of course).
