We use tofu now. It's cheaper
Red lentils would be a good replacement, and you can still get them in bulk at a somewhat reasonable price. For now.
If you want them to taste more like ground beef, give them a pan quick fry with a bit of soy sauce and worcestershire before incorporating into whatever you’re making.
