Volvo hasn't been the same though. They are also involved in the dieselgate scandal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_emissions_scandal?wprov=sfla1, which is sad because after learning about their invention of three point seatbelt and pivot to building a reputation as being safe, they had to do cheat on emissions test.
All European car makers participated in that scheme. The EU let them.
Yup, it's rather disappointing. But the EU did not let them.
Volvo released the modern standard seat belt in 1959 but it was originally worked on by a government safety company who offered it to Volvo. Volvo were also a very different company back then.

But as usual, good things were done by the public sector and the goodwill and financial reward were reaped by the private sector.
