I wouldn't say the subprime crisis was backed by nothing, as it was ultimately backed by housing construction. The thing is it didn't actually result in housing oversupply for a number of construction industry focused reasons.
Similarly, I don't think the data center construction boom will result in as much useful infrustructure as people think. and certainly the software side is pretty useless for the intel gathering tasks they want it to have.
