It's really good. Got an almost perfect score shooting five stand. I like a circle-dot reticle for it. The key is to keep both eyes open, acquire the target as quickly as possible and focus on it. Then, all I had to do was put the big circle-dot in the flight path ahead of the clay.

For home defense and drone defense, I think this setup is the way to go.

Correct on all counts.

Since you normally look straight down the top of the shotgun barrel, adding a red dot increases the sight height, so you need to raise your face higher as well, which is what I mean by "comb height increase". It's a chunk of plastic or foam or wood that sits atop the stock so your eye aligns with the red dot when you mount the rifle.
