I think part of the reason why Poles are saying this is because Ukraine had annexed land from Poland before. Polish Sci Fi author Stanislav Lem for instance was born in the then Polish city of Lwow which is now called Lviv in Ukraine. There's some very bad blood between them orchestrated in part by both the Nazis and the Soviet Union so I can understand why Polish people wouldn't want to stand up for Ukraine.
