I'm guessing the abusive relatives is how he ended up so disenchanted he resorted to this in the first place.

That's the same thing that came into my mind. He was probably a young guy with a lot of personal issues. Probably thought the whole deed as an act of rebellion against the system. He is nothing but a tragic symptom of the whole US decadence.
