There are only a handful of medical terms that give me a sense of heart-stopping cosmic horror. "Infection Status- Prion Disease Under Investigation" is one of those things I'd hate to see on a ward.

Originally it was the deer/elk/moose herds in Colorado. They seasonally transition between the Rockies, foothills, and front range beneath them. We built our cities and farms on the front range, our resource industries and houses in the foot hills, and pushed them into hostile mountain territory that was depopulated of their predators. The super unhealthy herds were concentrated and nature took its revenge on us with a nightmare protein that survives in their meat, the soil they interact with, and medical instruments used in treating patients with it. In those Cervidae populations it's chronic wasting disease which is now silently spreading throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. It's asymptomatic for months in them and years in us, eventually presenting as dementia. At some point it's going to make COVID look quaint.

I recognize that it is a prion disease, but I also recognize that my immune system will happily generate anything to attack me.
