I think I'm paraphrasing from a Robin Hobb book, but one of the characters had a line about how if he chose not to use a weapon at his disposal, someone else would come along and use it against him.

For some reason it was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the original comment. Chade wasn't exactly a good man, but he was practical I guess.
