You could do worse than an AR. I'd go with full size & proper stock though
I only half-ironically think this would be good for CQB. Compact form for maneuverability. You get a free hand to hold something else (battle buddy plushie). Unstabilized key-holing bullets will have a greater effect on target and reduce overpenetration. Plus, bonus flashbang feature!
Also, depending on your state, pistols can be conceal carried (with a license) while other classifications like rifles cannot.
