Generally, an artifact should be 100+ years old, but this is a flexible requirement if you find something rare and suitably linked to an era of history, not a strict rule. Anything over 100 is fair game regardless of rarity.

What do you hunt with a sword?
Typically used to finish off dangerous game like boars after they've been wounded.
More sporting, less humane for the beast. Unless the boars had spears and armour too. Please tell me they did.

I think part of it was a reluctance to waste ammunition - you can make a boar into a veritable pincushion before it actually dies, and gunpowder is a bit pricey to be repeatedly plinking a boar at near-point-blank range. Better to give it a good stab through the throat or heart and be done with it (probably, I don't actually know a lot about these hunting tools other than their broad usage case)
