Secular historical explanations for why the god of the Bible is the way he is (and how he's changed) make so much more sense than the mental gymnastics Christians have to do. Most of the old testament (and plenty of the new testament) descriptions and stories of him are way more characteristic of a tribal deity warring with other tribes' deities than the omnipotent, omnipresent, benevolent creator of the universe.
