At first it was rough around the edges but after I filled in the missing information to the database my experience got a whole lot better and now I get to enjoy the best looking maps app!

I made it a habit to add whatever place I want to navigate to, or add info like opening hours, if it is missing in the map and I have the time.
It's a really satisfying feeling to set an address as destination, knowing you put it on the map.
I also use StreetComplete to gamify my daily mental health walk.

What’s the best way to do this from mobile while I’m out and about? I’d love to help contribute for my area (and to teach family/friends how to contribute as well) but I don’t have a great handle on where to start myself.

The easiest way would be StreetComplete.
It gives you markers on a map with questions you can answer in app, to update and complete Openstreetmap data.
Vespucci is an app you can use for more more comprehensive edits, like adding new objects.

+1 on StreetComplete. Keep in mind, it restricts contributions to the area you're currently in based on location data. I resorted to spoofing my GPS location so that I could keep contributing :P

Vespucci seems interesting, thanks for the suggestion!

Umm,.. you are supposed to contribute based on observations in the real world.
Why would you need to spoof your location?

To cover other neighbourhoods in my city that I know well. When I am physically there, I'm usually biking and can't edit real-time, so I do so afterwards at home. I verify all my potential changes and ensure they match what I've seen. I've covered about half my city so far :)
