So as many of y'all know, I do DIY hormones now, as well as preparing them for other people. I've been very big on safety because I don't want to accidentally harm anybody. Well someone I gave hormones to started taking them before getting a blood test, which I understand, honestly I've done the same thing. However, I've read up on this a lot, I know the exact risks I'm taking on. The girl I'm talking about is a lot less read.

I really want to find the NHS informed consent document. I've seen it before, and it goes into the risks of HRT fairly concisely. Like I said, I'd just feel bad if I didn't have her read some sort of informed consent document because I don't want her going in blind. Giving her the HRT before having her read a bit may have been irresponsible, I just felt her dysphoria so hard and wanted to give it to her as soon as I could.

Alan L. Hart (1890 – 1962) was a US American 20th-century physician, radiologist, disease researcher, and novelist who pioneered the use of x-ray in detection for tuberculosis. He spent the latter part of his career in public health, undoubtedly saving many thousands of lives across the country expanding tb services and education throughout rural areas. In 1917 Hart was one of the first people to undergo a gender affirming hysterectomy in the United States, and is the first documented case of a female to male transition in medical literature in the English speaking world.

Hart begin expressing himself as a boy starting at least age 4, and was largely accepted by his family as male, with his grandfathers obituary in 1921 listing Hart as his grandson. A family friend of his stated in a 1921 interview “Young Hart was different, even then. Boys' clothes just felt natural. Hart always regarded himself as a boy and begged his family to cut his hair and let him wear trousers. Hart disliked dolls but enjoyed playing doctor. He hated traditional girl tasks, preferring farm work with the menfolk instead. The self reliance that became a lifelong trait was evident early: once when he accidentally chopped off his fingertip with an axe, Hart dressed it himself, saying nothing about it to the family.” During childhood school, Hart wrote most of his assignments under his first chosen name of Robert Allen Bamford Jr.

Hart received a total of 4 degrees in his life. He received a pre med degree in 1912 from Portland, Oregon’s Lewis & Clark College, then known as Albany College, followed by a medicine degree doctorate from the University of Oregon Medical Department in Portland (now Oregon Health & Science University) in 1917. His doctorate was originally issued under "Hart, [deadname] aka Robert L., M.D.”. which prompted a legal name change in 1918. He took his first medical job at a Red Cross hospital at this point. In 1928, Hart received a master’s degree in radiology from the University of Pennsylvania and was named director of radiology at Tacoma General Hospital. After working for several years as a tuberculosis consultant in Washington and Idaho, Alan Hart moved with his wife to Hartford, Connecticut, where he received a master’s degree in public health from Yale University in 1948. Around this time, Hart began taking testosterone and is described as having a deeper voice and being able to grow facial hair as a result.


TUBERCULOSIS

Hart devoted much of his career to research and treatment of tuberculosis. By the dawn of the 19th century, tuberculosis—or consumption—had killed one in seven of all people that had ever lived. Throughout much of the 1800s, consumptive patients sought "the cure" in sanatoriums, where it was believed that rest and a healthful climate could change the course of the disease. In 1882, Robert Koch's discovery of the tubercule baccilum revealed that TB was not genetic, but rather highly contagious; it was also somewhat preventable through good hygiene. After some hesitation, the medical community embraced Koch's findings, and the U.S. launched massive public health campaigns to educate the public on tuberculosis prevention and treatment. TB usually attacked victims' lungs first; Hart was among the first physicians to document how it then spread, via the circulatory system, causing lesions on the kidneys, spine, and brain, eventually resulting in death. With no cure for the disease in its advanced stages the only hope for sufferers was early detection.

X-rays, or Roentgen rays as they were more commonly known until World War Two, had been discovered only in 1895, when Hart was five years old. In the early twentieth century they were used to detect bone fractures and tumors, but Hart became interested in their potential for detecting tuberculosis. Since the disease often presented no symptoms in its early stages, X-ray screening was invaluable for early detection. Even rudimentary early X-ray machines could detect the disease before it became critical. This allowed early treatment, often saving the patient's life. It also meant sufferers could be identified and isolated from the population, greatly lessening the spread of the disease. By the time antibiotics were introduced in the 1940s, doctors using the techniques Hart developed had managed to cut the tuberculosis death toll down to one fiftieth of what it had previously been.

In 1937, Hart was hired by the Idaho Tuberculosis Association and later became the state's Tuberculosis Control Officer. He established Idaho's first fixed-location and mobile TB screening clinics and spearheaded the state's war against tuberculosis. Between 1933 and 1945 Hart traveled extensively through rural Idaho, covering thousands of miles while lecturing, conducting mass TB screenings, training new staff, and treating the effects of the epidemic. An experienced and accessible writer, Hart wrote widely for medical journals and popular publications, describing TB for technical and general audiences and giving advice on its prevention, detection, and cure. At the time the word "tuberculosis" carried a social stigma akin to venereal disease, so Hart insisted his clinics be referred to as "chest clinics", himself as a "chest doctor", and his patients as "chest patients". Discretion and compassion were important tools in treating the stigmatised disease.

In 1943, Hart, now recognized as pre-eminent in the field of tubercular roentgenology, compiled his extensive evidence on TB and other X-ray-detectable cases into a definitive compendium, These Mysterious Rays: A Nontechnical Discussion of the Uses of X-rays and Radium, Chiefly in Medicine, still a standard text today. The book was translated into Spanish and several other languages

I took a lot of shortcuts because I am slowly moving away from photoshop/illustrator to open source alternatives like Krita and Gimp. Its kind of a struggle, but I'm hoping with enough practice I'll be as good as I was in P$ in no time! Biggest issue is getting used to the sketching, pressure, and color tools, the colors are kinda all over the place and I'm finding it hard to equalize them.

I kinda hated how I had to spool up a vm to get into photoshop all the time on linux. No longer!

Hi everyone and welcome to the new Megathread :) For my first Mega I want to share a special interest of mine: the magnetic field and how to understand its behavior intuitively.

I'm guessing most of us have played with magnets before at some point and have felt that mysterious force pushing them apart or pulling them together, depending on how the magnets are oriented toward each other. Or done an experiment where you visualize the magnetic field lines with iron filings like this (Public domain, Newton Henry Black, Harvey N. Davis (1913) Practical Physics, The MacMillan Co., USA, p. 242, fig. 200)

These lines represent the shape of the magnetic field. The way you can interpret them is that if you place a compass in the field, the compass will align with the field lines at that point. And the closer the lines are to each other, the stronger the magnetic field is in that area. Also, magnetic field lines always form closed loops. They appear to end at the poles of a magnet, but actually they continue on inside the magnet. They do however exit/enter the magnet at the poles.

"But Witchy," you may ask, "why are the lines so concentrated at the poles but then they spread out so much as they travel from one pole of the magnet to the other?" Excellent question my theoretical student XD.

This is I think the key point that was a bit of a eureka moment for me when I realized it a long time ago when I was studying this stuff: the magnetic field lines "want" to be as short as possible while also "wanting" to be as far apart as possible. And when I say want, it does actually behave a little bit like a desire, as the magnetic objects in this field will experience a magnetic force tryin gthe move the object to spread out the field lines and make them shorter.

the bar magnet creates a strong magnetic field at the poles, which means lots of magnetic field lines are squeezed closely together at the poles where they enter/exit the magnet. These lines don't want to be so tightly packed together, so they immediately start spreading out but also immediately start curving towards the opposite pole to try to keep the distance short. If you then try to bring the north pole of another bar magnet close to the north pole of this one, both have magnetic field lines coming out trying to get to their respective south poles, but now even more tightly packed together as you bring the magnets together. Since the magnetic field lines don't want to be so close together, both magnets experience a force pushing each other away so that the magnetic field lines aren't being pushed together so tight.

Similarly, if the south pole of one bar magnet is brought near the north pole of another, the magnetic field lines exiting the north pole of one want to go to the south pole, but the closest south pole is the south pole of the other magnet being brought close, so now the lines go through both magnets before looping back around: (By Geek3 - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10515628)

However, between the closest poles of the two magnets, the lines are still concentrated but will try to spread out between the poles. Since the lines want to be as short as possible and don't want to spread out, the magnetic field exerts a force on the bar magnets pulling them together, since that would shorten the lines between the poles down to pretty much nothing.

Finally, a few of you may have been wondering what determines how much the magnetic field lines want to spread out vs shorten. These two tendencies are in opposition pretty much all the time, since spreading the lines out more requires making them longer. This is determined by something called the magnetic permeability which is a property of the materials that the field is passing through (even air or a vacuum). High permeability materials tend to concentrate the magnetic field lines more and allow them to get shorter, while low permeability materials tend to force the lines to spread out and lengthen. Examples of materials with high permeability are iron, cobalt, and other magnetic or ferromagnetic materials. Low permeability are pretty much anything that doesn't experience force in a magnetic field, so most things.

Hello everyone! Hestia here with a new Megathread! Years ago, before I transitioned and when I was still in college I took an anthropology class. My favorite part of the class was when we were covering different gender customs across the globe and got to make a report on one of them. I can't remember exactly which one I chose for that project, but what I do remember is a map with different pins scattered on it with various forms of gender-queerness. I decided to track it down and share it with you folks!

This map provides a brief summary of these genders, but does not go in depth. If you find any you're interested in, feel free to do some further research and share your findings here. I'll pin a comment to this post you can attach them. I'm going to share a couple that I found interesting and decided to look further into myself, both of them are non-binary and native american in origin.

The first one I want to talk about is the Winkte, which is a third gender role that was particulatly notable in the Lakota tribe The Winkte are seen as half-men, half-women, and considered sacred. They are typically AMAB and historically have served unique roles in matters of romance and matchmaking and often served as intermediaries for prospecting couples and their families. They also participated in war parties, functioning primarily as witnesses to battle and as doctors to care for the injured. They were also seen as seers, able to forsee paths to victory.

This next one I'm going to talk about seems mostly local to the Zuni people called the "Lhamana" and I find the Zuni culture to be particularly fascinating, even just doing a cursory glance at it.

Gender roles were well defined in Zuni culture, but the Zuni also valued the concept of a "middle" as it represented stability. This originates from their creation myth, which I won't go in detail here because I don't feel qualified to summarize it, but it's in the link down below.

The Zuni culture is pretty neat and they don't refer to gender when talking about children. They believed that gender wasn't an inborn trait but something you acquired as you approached puberty. I wish this was the western approach, but alas.

As children approach puberty they begin to differentiate through different hair styles or clothing choices. AFAB Lhamana would grind corn and make a bowl of stew when they get their first period. There's probably some cultural significance to this, but I'm not going to do a deep dive on it right now. AMAB Lhamana would start to wear dresses once they hit puberty and start performing women's work. Both AMAB and AFAB Lhamana were allowed to switch between male and female gender roles as they pleased.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Characterized by his sharp wit and strong sense of purpose, Shadow is a recurrent arch-rival of Sonic the Hedgehog, whom he resembles and shares many abilities. He is a major supporter of trans people, as evidenced by his catchphrase, "Trans people are cool!"

I like Shadow a lot. His first appearance in the series is in a game where him and Sonic are both fighting the government and destroying these multi-million dollar gunships. Sonic is doing it because he loves communism but Shadow is doing it because he has a blood feud against G.U.N., who are like the global government death squads because they killed this girl, Maria, who he was best friends with.

Maria basically had an incurable illness that Eggman's grandpa was trying to cure by creating an immortal lifeform, which is actually how Shadow was born. Also, Shadow has a copy of Maria's soul I guess? Seriously, look it up. I'm reading all this shit for the first time right now and that sounds kinda trans to me.

Anyway, she gets shot by the troops and despite Maria telling Shadow to be normal and happy, Eggman's grandpa is pissed off about it so he starts psyopping Shadow into wanting to kill everyone on Earth. Eggman's grandpa successfully does the psyop and locks Shadow away until Eggman finds and releases him.

With his newfound power, Shadow starts being evil and helping Eggman find the Chaos Emeralds because he sees him piss on the moon or something. This goes on for a while until he gets back on the space station and remembers what Maria said, deciding to finally be normal and happy.

He switches up, goes Hyper Shadow and helps Sonic defeat the Biolizard which is basically what it sounds like: a giant lizard who wears the space station like a little jacket and shoots lasers from his mouth. Also, that thing was the prototype Ultimate Lifeform before they decided on the optimal form of existence: a little bipedal anthro hedgehog.

So they beat this lizard up, I guess it dies and then the space station is hurtling toward the Earth. Shadow takes a Chaos Emerald and, with the help of Sonic, does one last Chaos Control on the space station, returning it to a stable altitude. Sonic finds himself back on the space station as he flies into the atmosphere. After this, a big semi-translucent Shadow appears on top of the Earth and everyone can see it.

Why would I lie about that? Here it is.

Anyway, a bunch of shit happens after that but I don't care about it. If someone else wants to talk about Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) feel free. What I really wrote this out to justify talking about is the moon in Sonic games. Like I said before, the moon gets pissed on and destroyed with the help of Shadow,

and then in the next game it's just fine but evil now(???)

and after THAT it's not evil anymore but it's fully intact:

What the fuck? Why? How? I watched it get blown up. Who put the moon back together? Anyway, we're getting in the weeds here. Welcome to the mega.
