COSMIC Alpha 2 (system76.com)
submitted 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) by ahoneybun@lemmy.world to c/system76@lemmy.world

As the second alpha version of COSMIC Epoch 1, it is incomplete. You’ll most certainly find bugs. Testing and bug reports are welcome and appreciated. New feature requests will be considered for Epoch 2, COSMIC’s second release.

Many devs dream of one day writing their own operating system. Ideally in their favorite language: Rust. For many of us, this dream remains just that: a dream.

Jeremy Soller from System76, however, didn't just contribute kernel code for Pop!_OS, but also started his own operating system, RedoxOS, which is completely written in Rust. One might get the impression that he likes to tinker with low-level code!

In this episode of Rust in Production, Jeremy talks about his journey. From getting hired as a kernel developer at Denver-based company System76 after looking at the job ad for 1 month and finally applying, to being the maintainer of not one but two operating systems, additional system tools, and the Rust-based Cosmic desktop. We'll talk about why it's hard to write correct C code even for exceptional developers like Jeremy and why Rust is so great for refactoring and sharing code across different levels of abstraction.

I think that the last time I've seen any "update" about the Virgo laptop project was over a year ago. Does anyone have more recent public information about Virgo?

New Keycaps! (reddthat.com)

All keycaps are from SPK (Formerly PimpMyKeyboad), which provides custom keycap sizing for the unique specs of the Launch keyboard. Goes well with my Cosmic DE layout!

21 February 2024 - Liam Dawe Writes:

System76 makers of Pop!_OS, various laptops and the stylish Thelio desktop line have announced a big refresh for their line of laptops. Featuring newer 14th Gen Intel CPUs, this is coming as part of their new "Ambition Unfolds" campaign.

They recently refreshed the Bonobo WS and Serval WS models, which are their most powerful and expensive offerings and they will soon be giving the same treatment to their cheaper Oryx Pro and Adder WS models too with the newer 14th Gen Intel i9 14900HX.

“Providing customers with a fast, hassle-free, and long-lasting computer minimizes obstacles for these users while accelerating progress.” says Sam Mondlick, VP Sales of System76. “For this reason, System76 dedicates themselves to empowering users to elevate their work on well-engineered systems.”

The main changes they noted are:

  • Adder WS - 14th Gen update, 15” only, new chassis design and up to 12 TB storage option - coming March 5th.
  • Oryx Pro - 14th Gen update, upgrade from H-class to HX-class CPU (now 24 cores vs 14 cores) - coming "soon".
  • Bonobo WS - 14th Gen update, now with options to choose between a 2K (240Hz) or 4K (144Hz) 17” display - available now.
  • Serval WS - 14th Gen update, new 17” 2K (240Hz) display option - available now.

Saw this new community from the landing page as a trending community. Just wanted to drop in and say that I had the great opportunity to chat with these guys as a supplier. The relationship didn't work out in the end, but these guys are just so cool and dedicated to making awesome products.

I know that my next system will be a system76 system.

Keep up the great work guys!
