Award-Winning Architectural Photographs from the 2025 Sony World Photography Awards

The winner of the Sony World Photography Awards 2025, Architecture category, was Xuecheng Liu (Mainland China). Centre of the Cosmos, a striking image of an ultra-wide aerial view of Times Square, New York City, rendered in 400 million pixels, exaggerates scale and perspective using a lens equivalent to 5 mm on a full-frame camera. The photograph resembles the dense urban core like a sprawling universe of light and concrete, symbolizing Times Square as the center of modern global cities.

Normal Type Decree
In January 1941, the Government of Nazi Germany officially abandoned the Fraktur type, following Martin Bormann's Normalschrifterlass ("Normal type decree"). Bormann refers to Fraktur as Schwabacher Judenlettern ("Jew-letters of Schwabach").[2] The statement ignores the fact that Schwabacher originated from the earlier Rotunda blackletter script and late medieval Bastarda types. Despite Bormann's assertion, there is no evidence of any connection between Jews and the Schwabacher typeface; in fact, at the time of the typeface's origin, the ownership of printing houses was reserved for Christian citizens. The decree eliminating the use of Fraktur actually makes prominent use of Fraktur, including the party name (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) and other letterhead elements.

Circular
(Not for publication).

On behalf of the Führer I notify for common attention that:

Regarding and calling the so called gothic typeface as a German typeface is wrong. In fact, the gothic typeface consists of Jew-letters from Schwabach. Like how they later gained control of the newspapers, the Jews living in Germany had seized control over the printing shops at introduction of the printing press, so that the Schwabacher Jew-letters were heavily introduced in Germany.

Today the Führer decided in a meeting with Reichsleiter Max Amann and book printing shop owner Adolf Müller that the Antiqua typeface is to be called the normal typeface in future. Step by step all print products have to be changed to this normal typeface. As soon as this is possible for school books, in schools only the normal typeface will be taught.

Authorities will refrain from using the Schwabacher Jew-letters in future; certificates of appointment, road signs and similar will only be produced in normal typeface in future. On behalf of the Führer, Mr. Amann will first change those papers and magazines to normal typeface, that are already spread abroad or are wanted to be.

Signed M. Bormann

Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills has been put up for sale. The modernist home, also known as Case Study House No. 22 , was completed in 1960 as an exploration into new models of affordable, adaptable postwar housing.

“After 65 years, our family has made the heartfelt and very difficult decision to place the Stahl House on the market,” the Stahl family noted in a message about the news. “This home has been the center of our lives for decades, but as we’ve gotten older, it has become increasingly challenging to care for it with the attention and energy it so richly deserves.”

DXA Studio’s modular homes for Lahaina wildfire survivors prove that emergency housing can deliver dignity, beauty, and permanence—not just shelter.

Nate Traylor
October 24, 2025

When the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century tore through Lahaina, Hawaii, in August 2023, housing survivors became the state’s most urgent design brief.

Today, nearly 170 factory-made housing units offer shelter to the displaced with more units to yet to come. They’re situated along a stretch of Maui coastline—small, bright colored dwellings that look permanent and communal. That’s by design.

New York-based DXA Studio launched Liv-Connected with the goal of deploying disaster-relief housing that doesn’t sacrifice design, health, or durability. In Maui, the result is FEMA’s first prefabricated, modular temporary homes built to the International Building Code and local amendments. One-, two-, and three-bedroom units meet Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS), are fully furnished on delivery, and can serve as either interim or permanent housing.

US President Donald Trump is doing "what dictators do" by passing executive orders that prescribe classical architecture for federal buildings, congresswoman Dina Titus tells Dezeen in this exclusive interview.

"I'm a strong believer that architecture is the way that you display many of your cultural values," Titus told Dezeen.

The Democratic representative from Nevada's first district has spearheaded attempts to counter Trump's moves to make classical and traditional architecture "the preferred styles" for civic buildings in the US.

During Trump's first term, she put the Democracy in Design Act before Congress, which seeks to codify the 1962 Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture standards that give local areas power over design decisions for government buildings.
