Music Discovery Guide | Dan's Guides

RateYourMusic

Lists, particularly RYM Ultimate Box Sets.

Charts: Personalized charts based on any combination of genres, descriptors, countries, languages and more.

You like an album? Go to its page on RateYourMusic, use some of the tags and labels (genres, descriptors, languages, etc.) to make a chart, or check out lists the album is included in.

Last.fm

Track your listening habits, get automated recommendations.

You like an artist? Go to their page on Last.fm and check out their similar artists (example: The Beatles).

You like album? Go to its page on Last.fm and scroll down to the "Similar Albums" section.

Check out what your "neighbours", i.e. people on Last.fm with similar music taste to you, listen to.

Problem: Last.fm doesn't differentiate between artists of the same name. → ListenBrainz

ListenBrainz

Free and open source alternative to Last.fm. Tied to the huge music database MusicBrainz. Does differentiate between artists of the same name.

Music Neighborhood: You like an Artist? Explore their related artists.

ListenBrainz Radio: Generate playlists by entering a "LB Radio prompt".

Check out what "Similar Users" listen to.

Created for you: Weekly/daily automatically created playlists based on your listening history (example).

Record Labels

You like an album? Find out which labels released it and check out their catalogues on a music database like MusicBrainz, RateYourMusic or Discogs. Though this is mostly recommended for smaller labels, and is definitely not very helpful for major labels.

Is anyone here a fan of Tommy by The Who? Because I'm not. It's amazing how boring that album is compared to the great Who's next.

Reccing National Wake, they are special because it was South Africa's first multiracial punk band. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Wake ) I'd say their music is similar to The Ruts.
