Anarchism vs. Marxism

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of "ML" (read: Dengist) influence. This is an undogmatic, constructive and good-faith environment for Anarchists and Marxists (and communists of all stripes rly) to discuss the merits, differences, and similarities between Anarchism and Marxism.

A certain knowledge of Anarchism and/or Marxism is expected, if you are new to this/interested in learning, please visit c/Socialism101 and c/Communism101 respectively, before participating here. The 101 communities will gladly help you by answering questions, providing resources etc.

Memes go in c/Lefty Memes and c/Commie Memes respectively.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, upvoting good contributions and downvoting those of low-quality!

Rules

0. Don't just post memes, images, or videos. This is a place for text-based discussion

Relevant images and documentaries related to your question or prompt are welcome to be linked, however.

Also refrain from low-effort posts and intentionally provoking/baiting people.

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith discussion is enforced here.

This entails:

And just generally trying to keep an open mind. Remember: other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet.

Please also feel encouraged to include context and resources/sources in your posts and comments. Provide those things if you are asked in good faith.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such,

as well as condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavour.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" (read: Dengist) (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

(if you are reading the rules to apply for modding this community, mention "Noble Numbat" when answering question 2)

6. Don't idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.

7. Absolutely no posts or comments meant to relativize(/apologize for), advocate, promote or defend:

(This is not a definitive list, the spirit of the other rules still counts! Eventual duplicates with other rules are for emphasis.)

Anarchism is a state of being. Communism is a prescription for social inequality.

If one is an anarchist (which is not political, or reactive, or seeking attention, or childish in any way) they are simply inconducive with hierarchy. It is a constitutional divergence from the normal preoccupation (we admire rich people, we are subservient to power centers [human], we adore institutions, etc.).

Communists say, the proletariat should unite and lead society. However, the proletariat must be educated. In a world where innumerable people are uneducated and refuse to educate themselves, Communism remains a distant if not impossible goal.

Socialism, as defined by Marx and Engels in The Communist Manifesto, is led by the bourgeoisie, as a moral predetermination of social equitability; it is a Christianization of capitalism, not an upheaval.

We should remember that the pamphlet known as The Communist Manifesto was released in 1848, on the heels of massive uprisings across Europe, which led to nationalism—not Communism. It led to more power for the bourgeois class, not extending down to the proletariat. Socialism always extends the power of the capitalized middle, never extending to the workers or destitute; the youth or the revolutionaries. Marx was wrong about this expansion.

Anarchism is a state of mind which says, nobody is better than someone else based on any material characteristic. Rich people have their modes of becoming richer, poor people have their modes of manipulating rich people, and people in the middle are often complicit in extending the power of the rich, or the government, or whoever they see as their benefactors which sustain them.

In an Anarchist society, we simply do not adhere to social constraints and prerequisites. We do not see higher and lower based upon financial capacity. We do not recognize 'elites' for any contribution, nor do we look down on those who do nothing for society. We see a chain of being which is ever unbroken, in which everyone is an equal.

Hiii there~ fellow revolutionary socialists! Ik, I have been putting this off for faaaar too long, but have finally got myself to open up mod applications!

Since the inception of this batch of communities, I haven't rly had the capacity to proactively moderate them as I'd like to (and still don't). My instance administrators took care of most of the reports and banning a few .world libs here and there usually did the job 😛 (luckily, Dengists and other such revisionists have thus far not rly invaded these communities as they did with Hexbear).

Thus, I'd like to request your help in taking over moderation and have come up with a vetting process to hand off virtually all day-to-day operations.

The "batch of communities" I keep referring to:

Here are some criteria/expectations:

You MUST:

  • be at least fluent in English (not proficient, doesn't have to be your 1st language; it's technically my 3rd language lol)
  • be a revolutionary socialist falling into the spectrum defined in the rules of the specific community
  • have a Matrix account

You SHOULD:

  • be somewhat knowledgeable with revolutionary socialism and it's concepts (again, relevant to the specific community
  • have enough time and motivation available to reasonably and regularly check on your community(/ies) (ofc in the context of what makes sense in your timezone)
  • have an account that is older than 3 months, with pre-existing history

Nice to have:

  • familiarity with Lemmy moderation tools
  • have a history of being active in the community(/ies) you'd like to mod

entirely optional:

  • be willing to regularly post in/contribute to your community(/ies)

To apply please:

  • send me your @matrixUsername:matrixHomeserver with a PM from the Lemmy acc with which you are applying
  • answer the questionnaire
  • subsequently contact me over on Matrix
  • send me your "filled out" questionnaire that way in the following format:
  1. Question1?
    your answer here
  2. Question2
    your 2nd answer here
    ...

(just copy paste the questionnaire and append your answers to the questions)

If I think you'd fit, I'll invite you into the Matrix space I've set up. I'd like to first pool some ppl there and then come up with a concept collectively, after which I'll give out the mod rights on Lemmy.
After this initial group has been established, future applications will be overseen in the "Recruits" room of the mentioned Matrix space.

Questionnaire:

  1. Which community(/ies) would you like to help moderate?
  2. Have you read the rules of said community(/ies) and do you agree to upkeep/enforce them proactively?
  3. Would you want humanity to evolve past capitalism towards a stage of a class-, money- and stateless society (ie. communism)?
  4. Do you think there should be a socialist world republic?
  5. Would you classify the Russian Federation and the Peoples' Republic of China as imperialist?
  6. What is your take on the fraternal war between Russia and Ukraine, triggered by Russian aggression?
  7. What is your take on the Zionist occupation of Palestine?
