Mmm... I dunno.

The setup was "self-insert awkward otaku meets cute and popular girl who's a secret otaku," but then after just one quick otaku-ish scene, she suddenly transformed into a manic pixie dream girl who's determined to drag him out into the world. Which means... ? Was the secret otaku thing just a pose that she quickly abandoned? Was it some sort of authorial bait and switch? Did the adaptation just sort of skip over a bunch of actual otaku and growing friendship content to get straight to the pending romance bit?

I'll at least watch the next episode, but I'm not hopeful.

Yeah, it really feels like watching some guy's delusion.
"I'm this loser guy who is not interesting whatsoever but for some dumb reason the hottest girl in class secretly loves me"
I have nothing against shows with a loner guy and an outgoing girl but if the guy is just plain boring the story will suck.

I am a huge fan of this manga, having followed it from the very beginning, but was coming in very cold due to the look and feel of the anime not quite matching that of the source material. The main characters are all a little off.

The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt, for instance, does a great job of translating the look and feel, and this one just doesn't. The original has an understated look all its own that I've not seen elsewhere.

Still, I warmed up enough at the end of the episode that I'll continue watching, gripes or no gripes. It's a great series, after all.
