The negative reviews in question complain of a "woke game" that "also has Muslims," and claim there's "too much forced politics" and that it "only took me 15 minutes to start getting force-fed DEI nonsense."
The anti-woke posturing is hilarious.
The developers raise a good question. I agree Valve needs to step up their moderation efforts, wherever I go on their Community Hubs I see people making detailed transphobic statements, or post ragebait to get awards
Valve has always had dogshit moderation and continues to do so. They do they absolute bare minimum and as the defacto PC gaming platform, they have little incentive to change
It's very frustrating, coming from a company that otherwise is relatively consumer friendly.
They won't, they do not care. They even fired mods for no good reason.
Of the sixty-five negative reviews, three in "helpful" section of the past 30 days have the "anti-woke" flavor to them. And the recent reviews are still overwhelmingly positive.
There's quite a few critiques of the time aspect as well as a perceived clunkiness of mechanics, though. I did play the demo a little while ago, and while I did enjoy myself, I would have to say those constructive critiques have hit it on the nose for why someone might not want to play the game. It does have an interesting premise, and definitely has a cozy feel to it... but it still feels a bit bare right now. And while I didn't get to the more advanced transport stuff, from what I saw and had to do, it did look like it would start to get frustrating.
All in all, probably best not to focus on one or two obnoxious trolls just looking for attention and focus more on the constructive criticism.
Valve actively refuses to moderate Steam, which has made it a very attractive platform for alt-right trolls to do their thing on.
One of my favorite games got an update two years ago that made a few minor cosmetic tweaks to some cringier elements from early in the game's lifespan, and two years later the forums are nothing but post-Gamergate trolls. Every now and then a Valve mod will show up to lock one (1) thread, which immediately gets remade so the rioting can continue. It's ridiculous that they allow this to go on.
So this guy got two negative reviews and it was enough to derail his game? This isn't a problem. If you have so few reviews that two are enough to knock it down then it wasn't really a legitimate score before anyway was it?
