Maybe — most importantly — what the president doesn’t understand is that civilian law enforcement is how you fight crime. And we’ve got terrific people on the ground. We’ve been building up our police forces, including the state police under my command, and we’ve also invested in violence prevention.
Hoping local law enforcement will save us is a bit thick headed.

He's the governor, the chief executive for the state. Law enforcement is under his control.

Bring saline and baby shampoo. Saline to rinse tear gas out of someone's eyes. Baby shampoo is for pepper spray, which is oil based. Don't bring your phone. Wear Z87+ (ANSI standard for impact resistance) eye glasses to protect you eyeballs from rubber bullets or shrapnel. Tear gas grenades are incredibly hot, do not attempt to handle them without gloves.
Keep it peaceful, aggressively point anyone attempting to damage property or cause violence. Know the exit routes and be safe.
